Painted Lady Life Stages |
We offer a variety of kits for raising your own caterpillars! Experience the miracle of the Painted Lady Life Cycle from your home or school. |
Egg
Painted Lady eggs are a light blue-green color, oval shaped, and are about the size of a pin head. The eggs are laid on the foodplant of the Painted Lady. |
Larvae
After the larva (caterpillar) hatches, it will often eat its egg shell. It will then move on to eat the leaf it was laid on. During the larval stage, it will be a very big eater and grow very quickly. The larva will reach approximately 1 ¼” within 3-4 weeks, when it will crawl to a safe place and hang from a branch or a leaf. It will then begin spinning thread and attach its tail to its resting place. |
Chrysalis (pupa)
In about 24 hours the skin splits down the back of the larva. Under this is the chrysalis, which hardens and becomes a golden color. The chrysalis is a tannish-gray color, accented with gold dots. This casing protects the life inside. The Painted Lady stays in this state for 7 to 10 days. |
Adult
When the chrysalis splits and the butterfly emerges, its wings will be soft and crumpled. It will hang upside-down and pump its wings, filling them with blood and unfolding them. The wings will dry and harden within the first day. |
